The sky is falling! The sky is falling!

Or maybe not.

Brilliant FA article on the financial strength of the United States; read the whole thing if you can. It's so easy for doomsayers to forget that U.S. foreign debt is dollar-denominated.

It's like deja vu all over again

Haven't we heard from this guy before?

Wow, freedom really is on the march

Now we have news of election talk in United Arab Emirates in addition to earlier news from Egypt, Lebanon, and Saudi Arabia as well as the Palestinian terroritories (not a typo) and of course Iraq.

Kinda looks more and more like maybe that Bush fella outsmarted everybody. I guess they just misunderestimated his strategery.

Big excitement over at Kos

Seems Condi was warned Al Qaeda might not be a charity organization. Given the fact we were all pretty clear on that long before 9/11 (USS Cole, first 9/11 attacks, Nigerian bombings, etc.), and the "warning" contained no mention of any specific threat, one next logically asks what sort of preventative action did the "smoking gun" memo recommend?

It said she should... hold a meeting to discuss a policy on Al Qaeda.

Which she did.

This is a story why again?

As ususal, Bill has a thorough analysis and many good points.

I commented on the different reactions from journalists caught in unethical behavior.

Dan Rather: Attributed "attacks" on him pointing out the basis of his story was crudely forged memos to "partisan political operatives"; stonewalled investigation; to this day maintains story was "rock-solid." Huge blow to CBS News' credibility.

Mary Mapes: Chief architect of forged memos. Accepted no blame, still pretends crude forgeries were real and she was a victim. Even bigger blow to CBS News' credibility.

Eason Jordan: Claimed U.S. military targeted journalists. Later claimed that he actually meant someone said the U.S. was targeting journalists (and even sent some newspeople to the back of the cafeteria line! the horror!). Still proudly serving a failing network whose founder compares successful networks to Hitler. It would be a huge blow to CNN's credibility if they had any viewers left who didn't already believe the US military intentionally targets not only journalists but civilians, children, puppies, kittens, stuffed animals, and the handicapped (and all for "fun").

Jeff Gannon: Resigned, immediately, over charges he likes Bush, changed his name, and worked in software. A devastating blow to his dozens of readers and to the credibility of his 3 part-time Web consultants, whose journalistic credibility may be forever shattered.

Kind of reminds me of the Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, Ted Kennedy response to scandal vs. the Newt Gingrich, Richard Nixon, etc. response.

Sunnis: The insurgents "made fools of us"

said Mahmoud Ghasoub, a [Sunni] businessman in Baiji, a restive northern town. "They voted to disrupt the elections but failed. Now we have lost both tracks. We did not vote, nor did they disrupt the elections."

This is one of the reasons democracy works so well to unite a country: if you don't vote, you lose. If you do vote, you're been co-opted into the process. The only hope an anti-democratic insurgeny has is to prevent elections by force, and the Iraqi insurgents have failed to accomplish that, thanks to the bravery of the Iraqi people.

Social Sensibility

Probably we'll end up with a trade: voluntary privatization for the young in exchange for means-testing (i.e., the wealthy, who pay the most into Soc Sec, get nothing back). Seems reasonable. The wealthy don't need the extra money, the youth do need the private accounts.

Might even get some realistic ideas like a reduction in the rate of growth of benefits, and a raising of the age limits. If they had done the sensible thing from the start and tied the retirement age to actuarial tables, we wouldn't have this problem. When we felt it needed lowering, we could have voted for it instead of creating this ticking demographic time bomb.

Abdul Amir, a true hero

Policemen guarding a polling station in Baghdad's Mansour neighborhood Sunday recognized the suicide bomber immediately. The young man was wearing Chinese-made high-top tennis shoes, a leather jacket and a red head scarf - the same kind of clothes as worn by an attacker at another site that same day.

Fourteen-year police veteran Abdul Amir al-Shuwayli, 29, acted without hesitation.

The bomber was steps away from a line of voters heading into Al-Zahour Primary School when Shuwayli moved toward him, police Capt. Firaz Mohammed Ali said. According to Ali, Shuwayli yelled, "Let me save the people. Let me save my friends."

Shuwayli threw his arms around the bomber and drove him backward about 50 feet into an intersection. The rush seemed to catch the suicide attacker by surprise. The bomber had a hand grenade but failed to throw it. A second or two passed before he detonated an explosive belt, police Lt. Col. Kadham Abbas said.

The blast shredded Shuwayli, whose body took the brunt of the explosion. It also tore the bomber apart, leaving only his face intact. Shrapnel injured three other officers and perforated walls around the intersection. Windows in nearby homes shattered.

Voters continued to line up.

"Suicide bombers are not the only ones willing to give up their lives," said Ali, one of Shuwayli's commanders. "We have some people who are ready to die as well."

A true hero of our time.

The RNC must have been praying hard

Because their prayers have been answered!

Somewhere, Karl Rove is singing "Glory, Glory Hallelujah!"

Ted Kennedy is behind the DNC wheel. Democrats everywhere are the passengers, it's dark, it's raining, and he's been drinking. I see a bridge coming up...

Time to up-armor your Tonka truck

scramble the Fisher-Price jets, and move Barbie to a secure location. Yes, it's come to this: the insurgents are threatening to behead... GI Joe.

Send in the little green army men!

UPDATE: It occurs to me we've just witnessed another "blogger moment," as I believe it was a military photo blog (OK, discussion board) that first noticed it. Of course the major blogs like Instapundit and Powerline quickly disseminated the link to tens of thousands of others, after which it eventually propagated to the MSM. After that, it just took the usual few hours for the brontasaurii to send the message from their heads to their tails to stop running what they thought (hoped?) was vicious jihadi propaganda but turned out to be merely another glaring example of their continuing slide into incompetent, gullible irrelevance.

My favorite slice of the farce was when a DU poster, after initially saying "Well we bombed them, what did we expect them to do?" later added an furious edit asking, with not the slightest hint of irony, "It's a FAKE?? What kind of SICK F*CK would do that??"

Yes, the people making the fake pictures are the sick ones, not the people actually cutting off heads. That's the self-described "reality-based community" in action.
